25 x 25 inches
The inspiration for "Melanin Machina" emerges from a deep contemplation of Ubuntu - the African philosophy that "I am who I am because of who we all are." This concept catalyzed my exploration of Black identity across time, technology, and transformation. As a visual artist working primarily in paper cut collage, I am driven to present Black bodies as both powerful and vulnerable, especially in our rapidly evolving technological age. The artwork draws from daily encounters with art, architecture, and societal dialogues, methodically distilled through a rigorous subtractive process. My selection of subjects - from young John Lewis's civil rights activism to Mayor Andre Dickens's groundbreaking work to uplift young black boys, to young luminaries Zoey and Nola - creates an intergenerational narrative that speaks to multiracial
democracy and the power of every voice. This carefully curated ensemble represents our collective journey toward a society where all voices matter in advancing the power of people in all places.
"Melanin Machina" responds by reimagining Black bodies as hybrid forms that embrace technological advancement while prioritizing our collective health, well-being, and security.
