24 × 36 inches
Moma's Ace of Spades reimagines the classic playing card character through Wunderland Noir's liberating lens, where a Black mother exists beyond societal constraints. Dressed in crisp white attire adorned with an oversized bow and top hat, the figure exists simultaneously in two orientations, symbolizing the complex balance between identity and transformation.
This duality celebrates what earthly society often penalizes - a Black woman's right to encompass all aspects of self. Here, unlike corporate spaces where Black motherhood faces doubled bias and pressure to overperform, the figure moves boundlessly between roles. Hand-drawn mechanical gears embellished with black glitter interface with delicate hand-beaded black lace, while vine-like tendrils of regional flora create a textural dialogue between structure and organic form.
The piece's dual orientation speaks to a freedom of transformation - each reveals a distinct perspective, yet both coexist harmoniously, celebrating a space where Black women can fully embrace their multifaceted existence.
